Anchorage (Alaska) Community Schools Is Back Up and Running! ACEA takes reigns from school district. Want to learn how to massage your dog? Paint a landscape? Or learn how to cook the most flakiest pie crust ever? The Anchorage (Alaska) Community Education Association (ACEA) has taken over the administration of the Community Schools program and is set to resume classes this fall.

October 3, 2004 - Its back! The Anchorage Community Education Association (ACEA) has taken over the administration of the Community Schools program and is set to resume classes this fall.

The ACEA is dedicated to providing affordable educational opportunities to residents of all ages throughout Anchorage and the surrounding communities. All of the services and activities are guided by a passion for lifelong learning and a dedication to continued school enrichment and community development. In addition, all programming seeks to maximize facility and resource use and build upon agency collaboration.

The Anchorage School District (ASD) transferred over the responsibility of all program operations to ACEA, a private non-profit agency since 1976, in an effort to ensure long term program sustainability.

The school district program had a great history for us to work with and that, along with the support of the community, will help position ACEA for continued growth and development over the next year, said Lora Jorgensen, ACEA Executive Director.

In addition to new management, other changes include on-line registration for all classes at the ACEA website targeted for the beginning of October. For those who are unable to register on-line, they will still be able to register in person at a time and date to be determined.

The fall Community Cache will be in the Sunday, October 3rd edition of the Anchorage Daily News with registration beginning Tuesday, October 5th. Classes would begin the following week at these school district locations Spring Hill, Sand Lake, Baxter, Turnagain, Gruening (Eagle River), and Four Valleys (Girdwood) along with many other sites to be announced.

ACEA is also actively recruiting volunteer instructors for its fall classes. Are you passionate about a subject matter? Willing to give back to your community? Then you will make a great instructor, Jorgensen said. If you are interested in leading a class, please register on the ACEA website at www.akcommunityschools.org and click on the teach! tab at the top of the page.

For the past 30 years the Community Schools program has provided educational programming for all ages in the areas of academic enhancement, recreation, health and wellness, home and business, and the use of technology applications. Last year alone, more than 45,000 local residents participated in over 800 Community School courses.
